Pipe Bursting Technique
Advantages
– Alternative to open excavation
– Used when your existing sewer line is plugged and needs to be replaced
– Prevents major re-landscaping of your yard
– Can pull the new line under a deck or addition
– New pipe is continuous with no joints underground – minimizes roots penetrating.
Process
We start by cutting a hole in the concrete floor in the basement where the sewer line runs. Then we dig under the floor to expose the old line. Outside we dig a hole at the property line or in the street to expose the sewer line there as well. A cable gets pushed through the old line and attaches to the new pipe.
Next we set up our machine inside the hole in the basement floor. This machine pulls the cable inward pulling the new pipe, breaking the old pipe and expanding the hole. This allows the new pipe to follow the path of the old pipe as it gets pulled through.
The new pipe is then connected back to the existing pipe at each end and the holes are backfilled or cemented.
We are able to pull in a new water line with the sewer line at the same time if both need to be replaced. Over the years we have found that a lot of water lines rust and plug off which causes them to need to be replaced too.
Open Excavation Technique.
Advantages
– Initial sewer line replacement is cheaper
– Fixes low spots in old line when replaced with new line
Process
A hole is excavated from the house to the property line to expose the old sewer line. The old sewer line is disconnected and removed. Here the slope of the ground is checked to make sure there is consistent drainage. The new sewer line is placed in the trench and reconnected to the existing line as close to the footing as possible. The hole is then backfilled.
Following this procedure, the yard requires full restoration.
